"I reckon everybody who 'has rhythm', maybe even all human beings but some only latently, has a metronome in their brain, or maybe it's to do with the heartbeat, idunno, but we all get satisfaction, even if only to a small degree, from hearing music or a clock or anything keeping a steady beat. We get a second, exciting kind of satisfaction from syncopation, when the rhythm strays off the regular route. A third satisfaction results from the friction between those two. If the rhythm strays too much or if it doesn't stray much at all then there is no third satisfaction. I could set up some sort of equations here like "S2 - S1 = S3. S3 x Sx = g, where g = groove and Sx = other factors involving frequencies and such", but I suck at maths, that equation doesn't work, and it's probably a stupid idea anyway"
